Ghana’s Legendary rapper and Hiplife pioneer Reginald Yaw Asante Osei know in public as ”Reggie Rockstone” has revealed the secret behind why he refused to be opening art to Shawn Carter known as ”Jay Z” in showbiz in 2006 during his visit to Ghana. Reggie Rockstone became a chopping board in the various media and household after showing character to the American rapper.
Jay Z had an African tour that featured South Africa, Angola, Nigeria and Ghana. Charter House was the organizer of the said concert. Artists like Obrafour, Samini, Wutah and Rockstone. The concert took place at Accra International Conference center. The organizers of the concert (Charter House) circled Reggie to be the opening art of the show. Reggie being one of the best rappers in Ghana felt disrespected at that time looking at his status. Reggie Rockstone declined the offer.
According to Rockstone, he wanted Jay Z to introduce him on stage and that would have made him feel big due to the pedigree he was holding in rap then. He boldly refused even though the amount involved was quite huge.
A statement released by Rockstone’s management at the time stated that the refusal was due to the fact that he being a headline act “would have compromised the respect and integrity his many fans have for him,” and that the artiste didn’t want to reinforce the “shabby opportunistic treatment often afforded local artistes.”
In an interview with Blacknight podcast; Reggie states that “I refused because, at the time I realised how Star struck y’all was, I’m blown away, too. I’m feeling the vibe that he’s come home, because the strength of Hip Life is how these folks were able to come home (Hip-hop).
“And so my whole idea was, if Jay Z comes on stage and he introduces me or not even introduces me, brings me out, of course, he’s the headliner that empowers Hip Life. Yeah. If you have the dude who is the OG of Hip Life as an opening act, we are losing power. I’m supposed to be the leader,
